Alpha Design Technologies is a Bengaluru defence-electronics manufacturer that became the first private assembler of Indian Space Research Organisation satellites. The credit-rating agencies ICRA and CARE Ratings both date its incorporation to 2003, by Col. (Retd.) H. S. Shankar — a former Director (R&D) at Bharat Electronics Limited — together with Vasaka Promoters and Developers Private Limited, a special purpose vehicle floated by promoters of the Murugappa and Karvy groups; the company's own website instead says it was established in 2004. Its base business is the design and manufacture of electronic, electrical, optical and telecommunication equipment for defence, sold to the Ministry of Defence, DRDO laboratories, Bharat Electronics, Hindustan Aeronautics and units of ISRO.

The company's space work began with assembly, integration and testing rather than design. A consortium it led built IRNSS-1H, the first Indian satellite assembled, integrated and tested by private firms under ISRO supervision — and the satellite was lost on 31 August 2017 when the heat shield of PSLV-C39 failed to separate 203 seconds into flight, leaving the 1,425 kg navigation spacecraft in a 167.4 by 6,554.8 km orbit from which it re-entered over Vanuatu on 2 March 2019. Its replacement, IRNSS-1I, again had its assembly, integration and testing partly done by the Alpha-led consortium of six small firms under the supervision of the U R Rao Satellite Centre, and reached orbit on PSLV-C41 on 11 April 2018. The same consortium later carried out the assembly, integration and testing of EOS-04, the 1,710 kg radar imaging satellite launched on 14 February 2022.

In July 2018 ISRO's U R Rao Satellite Centre signed its first contracts to outsource satellite assembly, integration and testing, dividing 27 satellites over three years — extendable by two — between consortia led by Alpha Design Technologies, Tata Advanced Systems and Bharat Electronics, with the work done inside ISRO's Satellite Integration and Test Establishment on spacecraft of 1.5 to 3 tonnes. Alpha's group drew in six small and medium enterprises, among them Newtech Solutions, Aidin Technologies, DCX Cables, Vinyas Technologies, Avantel Systems and Exseed Speed, and the company put 70 engineers and technicians through nine-month ISRO training courses. Chairman and managing director Col. H. S. Shankar said then that "Initially our teams would get minimum ISRO supervision and later would independently be making complete satellites." Five years later NewSpace India Limited transferred ISRO's IMS-1 small-satellite bus, a platform sized to carry 30 kg payloads, to the company.

Adani Defence Systems and Technologies Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Adani Enterprises, bought 26% of Alpha Design in December 2018 for a total acquisition value of ₹400.0 crore and, through control of the composition of the board, holds it as a subsidiary; ICRA recorded the founding vehicle Vasaka's stake at 56.77%, down from 85.8%. CARE Ratings judged that before the deal the company could not bid for high-value projects for want of financial resources. Standalone operating income then grew from ₹360.20 crore in FY21 to ₹579.32 crore in FY22 against an order book of ₹4,224 crore as on 20 September 2022, but in the same December 2022 review CARE moved its outlook from Positive to Stable over delayed billing on high-value orders and an operating cycle stretched to 280 days, and both CARE and ICRA withdrew their ratings at the company's own request, leaving no live public rating. In May 2025 NewsBytes reported Alpha Design as one of three private firms, with Ananth Technologies and Centum Electronics, asked to build 31 of the 52 satellites of the $3 billion Space Based Surveillance-3 programme on a schedule compressed from four years to 12-18 months.
