The Boeing Company manufactures commercial aircraft, defence equipment and space systems. Its corporate headquarters are in Arlington, Virginia, following a headquarters announcement in May 2022. Boeing lists three business units: Commercial Airplanes, Defense, Space & Security, and Global Services. In February 2026, the company moved the headquarters of its defence and space business back to St. Louis.
Boeing is developing the Starliner crew capsule with NASA’s Commercial Crew Program. The company says the vehicle is designed for a mix of passengers and cargo, with up to four NASA-sponsored crew members on station service missions. Boeing describes autonomous docking, a reusable crew module and a land landing system..
Starliner carried Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams to the International Space Station on its June 2024 crewed test. NASA and Boeing identified helium leaks and thruster problems as it approached the station. On August 24, 2024, NASA decided the capsule would return without its crew, citing uncertainty about the propulsion system and insufficient agreement among experts on the safety of a crewed return.
NASA released its investigation findings on February 19, 2026, and classified the test as a Type A mishap. The agency identified hardware failures, qualification gaps and organisational shortcomings. The spacecraft had landed without its crew in September 2024; Wilmore and Williams returned aboard Crew-9 in March 2025. NASA stated that corrective work remained necessary before the next Starliner flight.
Boeing also markets satellite platforms and associated ground and operations services. Its satellite business describes software-defined communications payloads, military communications systems, small-satellite constellations through Millennium Space Systems, and ground architecture integration. The portfolio includes commercial communications customers as well as government and national-security programmes.
