Larsen & Toubro

Mumbai engineering group and one of ISRO's oldest industrial suppliers — booster segments, umbilical plates and tracking radar, and half of the HAL–L&T PSLV consortium.

Larsen & Toubro is a Mumbai engineering and construction group that has supplied hardware to India's space programme for more than five decades. Founded in Bombay in 1938 by the Danish engineers Henning Holck-Larsen and Søren Kristian Toubro and legally incorporated in 1946, it is India's largest private-sector defence manufacturer by revenue and reported ₹290,860 crore of revenue in FY2026 across engineering, infrastructure, information technology and financial services. Its space work sits inside the Precision Engineering and Systems business, whose revenue rose 41 per cent to ₹46.10 billion in the 2024 fiscal year, and is carried out mainly at the Powai aerospace works in Mumbai and the aerospace manufacturing facility at Coimbatore.

The company calls itself a long-term partner of ISRO that has been involved in every mission, naming Chandrayaan-1 and 2, Mangalyaan and Gaganyaan. For Chandrayaan-3 it manufactured and proof-pressure-tested the head end segment, middle segment and nozzle bucket flange of the launcher's solid boosters at Powai, and shipped ground and flight umbilical plates from Coimbatore. Its older contributions include the precision monopulse tracking radar used at Satish Dhawan Space Centre to acquire and track launch vehicles, the deep space network antenna at Bayalalu, and launch vehicle and satellite integration work at SHAR.

In November 2020 L&T handed ISRO the middle segment of the S200 solid booster for the human-rated GSLV Mk III that will fly Gaganyaan — a piece 3.2 metres in diameter, 8.5 metres long and weighing about 5.5 tonnes, built at the Powai Aerospace Manufacturing Facility and delivered ahead of schedule. J D Patil, then a whole-time director, said the company 'felt honoured to be trusted by ISRO in this extremely critical space program'.

On 5 September 2022 a consortium of L&T and Hindustan Aeronautics took an ₹860 crore contract from NewSpace India Limited to realise five PSLV-XL launch vehicles end to end over four years, working inside existing ISRO facilities under a government-owned, contractor-operated arrangement. L&T leads assembly at Coimbatore, where the first vehicle was put together without ISRO doing the build, and the consortium unveiled it in November 2025 for a flight carrying the Oceansat-3A Earth-observation satellite from Satish Dhawan Space Centre.

That flight keeps moving. A launch first expected in early 2025 was pushed to the middle of that year, then to early 2026, and as of 17 August 2026 it is expected in March 2027, with no official reason given by NewSpace India Limited, ISRO, HAL or L&T. A T Ramchandani, who heads L&T Precision Engineering and Systems, said in November 2025 that 'We have started delivering the PSLV hardware' and that 'We are hopeful that next year we will probably have 2 or 3 launches', adding that ISRO 'may end up doing another ten launches after these five'. Beyond launch vehicles the company builds equipment for ISRO's deep-space missions and has worked on Aditya-L1 and on Gaganyaan crew module and crew escape system development.
