Serendipity Space
Bhubaneswar startup building re-entry satellites to crystallise drugs in orbit; its Alchemy factory module flew a stratospheric balloon test in March 2026.
Serendipity Space is a Bhubaneswar deep-tech startup, founded in 2024, that wants to manufacture pharmaceuticals off Earth. Its stated plan is to build reusable satellites with re-entry capability, crystallise protein and small-molecule drugs in orbit where gravity-induced defects do not form, and bring the product back to Earth. The three founders are Antariksh Parichha, chief executive, who took a master's in applied physics at the Technical University of Munich; Jivitesh Debata, chief technology officer, a computer scientist from the Rochester Institute of Technology; and Monica Ekal, chief of space systems, whose doctorate in space robotics is from Instituto Superior Tecnico in Portugal and who has worked at the German Aerospace Center and as a visiting scholar at NASA.
Campus Fund put in a pre-seed round announced on 4 July 2025. Neither side disclosed the amount, and the only valuation on the public record is third-party data: OfficeChai cited Dealroom figures placing the company at roughly Rs 22.5 crore post-money as of May 2025. At the time of the round the company said it had built and ground-tested two crystallisation modules and one formulation module, and that the ground validation had reached laboratory-grade crystallisation quality with proteins and small molecules. Its commercial argument was pharmaceutical rather than aerospace: an average net present value of $1.2 billion per novel drug, and an in-space manufacturing market the company projected to pass $10 billion by 2030.
The first flight test came in March 2026 and was reported publicly on 14 August 2026. An orbital-class satellite prototype carrying Alchemy, the company's autonomous pharmaceutical factory module, flew on a stratospheric balloon from the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research balloon facility in Hyderabad. The payload held commercial monoclonal antibody therapeutics, small molecules and additional proteins for drug discovery. Parichha said the module ran continuously under harsh conditions, executed crystallisation without human intervention, and preserved crystal integrity through a controlled return, touchdown and recovery; the flight also exercised the prototype's heatshield and avionics.
What the flight did not do is reach orbit. The company's own roadmap treats near-space balloon demonstrations as the step before full orbital missions in low Earth orbit, where its satellites would crystallise drugs and return them for use, and the reporting of the August 2026 announcement carries no date for that first orbital mission and no launch contract. The pre-seed amount likewise remains undisclosed. Serendipity Space points to Merck's work with NASA on an improved form of the cancer drug Keytruda aboard the International Space Station as the precedent for its chemistry, and argues that compressing drug development timelines of 12 to 15 years is where the commercial case sits.
