The World Meteorological Organization published three iClimateAction assessments on 21 September 2026 covering gaps in climate observation networks, satellite-data use and users’ needs. Its summary identifies difficulties turning observations into information for local decisions.

Satellites contribute to 42 of the 55 essential climate variables, WMO notes. In a February survey of 33 climate experts, communication with decision-makers was the most frequently selected barrier to greater satellite-data use, ahead of access and observation quality. That ranking describes this expert sample.

The ground-network assessment identifies geographical gaps and dependence on short-term research funding. Such measurements help calibrate satellite observations and monitor places satellites cannot adequately capture, including beneath the ocean surface.

The user assessment, still interim, highlights demand for street-scale urban heat information and detailed field measurements for Maldives ecosystems. The network and satellite assessments will contribute to the Global Climate Observing System’s 2027 status report, according to WMO.
