PierSight Space builds synthetic aperture radar satellites for one job: watching what happens at sea. Founded in 2023 in Ahmedabad by Gaurav Seth, a former ISRO scientist who built SAR payloads for NISAR, Chandrayaan-2 and Chandrayaan-3, and by Vinit Bansal, previously an engineer at National Instruments, the company is developing Varuna, a planned 32-satellite constellation that carries radar imaging and Automatic Identification System reception on the same spacecraft. The pitch to coast guards and insurers is that a ship can be seen whether or not it is broadcasting its identity, and through cloud, weather and darkness.
Its first hardware in orbit was a technology demonstrator, also named Varuna, which flew as one of ten non-government payloads on POEM-4, the spent fourth stage of ISRO's PSLV-C60, launched on 30 December 2024 with the SpaDeX docking satellites. The CubeSat-format payload carried a deployable reflectarray antenna, X-band software-defined radar and radio electronics, an electronic power conditioner and a solid-state power amplifier, and the company said the flight was meant to bring those subsystems to technology readiness level 9. ISRO reported that all 24 payloads on POEM-4 worked as expected; the platform was de-orbited to 350 km and re-entered over the Indian Ocean on 4 April 2025, about three months after launch.
The commercial constellation has moved more slowly. In May 2025, announcing a seed extension that took total funding to $8 million, PierSight said its first operational SAR and AIS satellite, Varuna 2.0, would launch in mid-2026, and that a maritime analytics product called MATSYA and a drone-borne radar would reach customers by the end of 2025. When Via Satellite profiled the company on 27 July 2026, it reported that launching the first constellation satellite was still the next stage, and that PierSight was raising a Series A to speed its launches up.
Alongside the maritime work, PierSight is the radar specialist in the consortium that IN-SPACe selected on 13 August 2025 to build India's first privately owned national Earth-observation system, a 12-satellite constellation costed at more than ₹1,200 crore and shared with Pixxel, Dhruva Space and SatSure. IN-SPACe signed the formal partnership agreement with the consortium company, Allied Orbits Private Limited, a year later, on 13 August 2026. The second product line, Vidura, is a drone-mounted SAR payload for foliage-penetrating surveillance, with trials planned through 2026.
