Isar’s Spectrum reaches orbit on its second flight
The German company’s launcher lifted off from Andøya, Norway, on September 5 and deployed its mission payloads. The European Space Agency called it the first launch to orbit from continental Europe; the cited accounts differ on whether it carried five or six CubeSats.

Isar Aerospace’s Spectrum rocket reached orbit on its second flight after lifting off from Andøya Spaceport in Norway at 22:12 Central European Summer Time on September 5. The European Space Agency and Space.com both reported orbital insertion and payload deployment. ESA described the outcome as the first launch to orbit from continental Europe.
Spectrum is a two-stage launcher 28 metres tall and 2 metres in diameter, designed to carry up to 1,000 kilograms to low Earth orbit, according to ESA. Its first test flight in March 2025 cleared the pad but lasted about 30 seconds, ESA said. The September 5 mission, called Onward and Upward, was therefore the vehicle’s first reported orbital result.
The accounts do not agree on the CubeSat count. ESA said the flight carried six commercial and educational CubeSats and an experiment; Space.com reported five CubeSats and one non-deployable scientific experiment. Both accounts say the upper stage deployed the payloads, while Isar said it was working with customers to confirm satellite status. The cited sources do not provide independent operator reports on the individual spacecraft.
The European milestone needs a narrow reading. ESA called Spectrum the first European Launcher Challenge provider to reach orbit and quoted its space-transportation director as calling Isar the first European company to reach orbit with its own launch vehicle. Space.com separately described it as the first rocket to reach orbit from Western Europe, noting that orbital launches have long occurred from Russia’s European territory.
ESA said the launch completed the first required orbital milestone for the European Launcher Challenge, whose selected providers must achieve an orbital launch by 2027. Isar’s chief executive Daniel Metzler said the company would now focus on scaling production and its order pipeline; those commercial ambitions are the company’s stated plans, not evidence of a demonstrated launch cadence or customer service.
The next public evidence will be payload-operator status updates and Isar’s post-flight telemetry review. For now, the two independently accountable accounts support the narrower outcome: Spectrum reached orbit and deployed its mission payloads on September 5, while the exact CubeSat count and the health of each spacecraft remain unresolved in the cited public record.
