Vikram-1 reaches orbit on India’s first private orbital launch

Skyroot’s four-stage launcher placed two satellites in low Earth orbit on its maiden flight, crossing a threshold for India’s commercial launch ecosystem.

At 12:05:30 p.m. on 18 July, Vikram-1 lifted from Sriharikota and became the first privately developed Indian rocket to launch payloads to orbit from Indian soil. ISRO reported that SCOPE and Grahaa were injected into low Earth orbit, while additional payloads remained with the upper stage for in-orbit experiments.

A first attempt with operational consequences

The mission matters beyond a national first. Reaching orbit requires the full chain—propulsion, staging, guidance, flight software, range coordination and payload deployment—to work within narrow margins. Doing so on the maiden orbital attempt gives Skyroot flight data that ground tests cannot reproduce and gives prospective customers a completed mission to evaluate.

Private vehicle, shared infrastructure

Vikram-1 uses three solid stages and a liquid upper stage. Its route to the pad also demonstrates how India’s private launch model currently works: Skyroot developed the vehicle, while ISRO facilities supported solid-motor casting and testing, liquid-engine testing, integration and range operations. IN-SPACe coordinated access, reviews and launch clearances.

That shared-infrastructure model lowers the need for a startup to reproduce an entire national test and launch complex before flying. The next measure of maturity will be cadence—how reliably the company can turn this demonstration into repeat missions, learn from flight data and serve the small-satellite market on predictable schedules.
