ISRO targets first Kulasekarapattinam launch for March–April 2027
V. Narayanan’s November 1 remarks add a launch window for the Tamil Nadu spaceport. The reports do not name a vehicle or establish that commissioning is complete.
Updated : Follow-up to our August 17 construction and operator-search report, adding the March–April 2027 first-rocket target from November 1 remarks reported on November 2.
Report a correction
ISRO is targeting March or April 2027 for the first rocket launch from Kulasekarapattinam in Tamil Nadu, chairman V. Narayanan told reporters on November 1. DT Next and Deccan Chronicle reported the remarks on November 2, with DT Next placing the exchange at Chennai airport. Narayanan described construction of the new launch facility as progressing rapidly.
The date window adds to the position covered in Space Exploration .IN’s August 17 report, which tracked equipment installation and the search for a private operator. That report found no new public calendar tying together commissioning, operational handover and a first orbital launch. The November remarks give a first-rocket target rather than announce completion of those separate steps.
An earlier Department of Space reply, published by the Press Information Bureau on March 18, expected commissioning in the 2026–27 financial year and launches of the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle, or SSLV, from the site in 2027–28. Those were separately stated milestones; the new reports do not identify which rocket would make the first flight.
Neither November 2 report gives an exact launch date, a payload or an operator award. Both describe an intended launch while construction continues. March–April 2027 remains a target attributed to the ISRO chairman, rather than a confirmed mission schedule.
