Starlink is preparing its Indian satellite-broadband operations around a network of 20 gateway sites, Lauren Dreyer, SpaceX’s vice-president for Starlink business operations, told India Mobile Congress on 7 October. The Economic Times reported her description of hundreds of antennas at those sites, citing an ANI account of the remarks.
Dreyer said the company had designed its Indian operations around the country’s security requirements and regulations, with controls throughout the system and Indian user data kept in India. ThePrint reported those statements; Mint’s video report also describes the India-specific operating arrangements. These are the company’s account of its preparations, rather than a regulator’s certification.
The newly disclosed ground-network details add a separate element to Starlink’s earlier constellation-approval effort. On 20 August, The Economic Times reported that the company had resubmitted an application for its second-generation satellite system, citing people familiar with the matter. A constellation application concerns the satellites authorised to serve the market; the October remarks describe infrastructure on the ground.
Gateways connect satellites to the terrestrial internet, as ThePrint explains in its 7 October report. The outlet reports that Starlink still awaits spectrum and final security clearance before commercial service can begin. It also records the earlier telecom licence and first-generation constellation authorisation, separating those permissions from permission to sell service.
Dreyer described Starlink as ready to work with the Indian government and operators once authorised, according to ThePrint. The remarks do not provide independent verification of the site count or data controls, and they do not announce a clearance decision or a commercial launch date.
