NASA’s October 7 photo record documents astronaut Anil Menon holding a heat-shield experiment capsule inside Northrop Grumman’s Cygnus XL cargo spacecraft. The caption identifies it as part of the Kentucky Reentry Probe Experiment, or KREPE-3, before the vehicle’s departure from the International Space Station.

In an October 9 report, NASA’s Ames Research Center described astronauts activating experimental capsules inside the departing spacecraft. The experiment is intended to gather measurements as Cygnus breaks apart during atmospheric re-entry, with sensors recording conditions including temperature, pressure and motion. The capsules are designed to transmit data to researchers by satellite.

The capsule in Menon’s photograph contains an Adaptable Deployable Entry and Placement Technology heat shield developed at Ames, according to the image record. NASA describes this umbrella-shaped design as increasing surface area to slow descent; at full size, it can fold for launch.

Menon was born and raised in Minneapolis to Ukrainian and Indian immigrants, according to his NASA biography. His documented role here is handling the experiment capsule; the retained records do not identify him as the project’s scientific lead.

NASA’s records differ on the capsule count: the October 7 image caption lists ten, while the October 9 Ames report lists twelve. Neither retained record explains the difference, so a single total is not established here.

NASA’s October 9 station advisory scheduled Cygnus’s destructive re-entry for October 11 and stated that the agency would not cover the deorbit. That schedule does not establish a completed test. The retained sources report preparation and measurement objectives, without re-entry data or verified heat-shield performance results.
