Pixxel

Bengaluru hyperspectral Earth-observation company flying six Firefly satellites and leading the ₹1,200 crore consortium building India's national EO constellation.

Pixxel builds hyperspectral Earth-observation satellites and sells the imagery and analytics derived from them. Awais Ahmed and Kshitij Khandelwal, both BITS Pilani graduates who worked on the institute's ISRO student satellite project, founded the company in February 2019; it runs from Bengaluru with a second base in El Segundo, California. Hyperspectral sensors split reflected sunlight into hundreds of narrow wavelength bands, which lets analysts separate crop disease, soil nutrients, mineral signatures and gas leaks that conventional multispectral imagery blurs together.

Two technology demonstrators came first: Shakuntala, a 6U CubeSat under 15 kg carrying about 151 bands at roughly 10 m resolution, launched on SpaceX's Falcon 9 Transporter-4 rideshare on 1 April 2022, and the 16.5 kg Anand followed on ISRO's PSLV-C54 on 26 November 2022. The commercial Firefly satellites image across about 135 bands in a swath Pixxel's documentation gives as 38 km, from a sun-synchronous orbit near 589 km; the company records a ground sampling distance of roughly 5.4 m, while NASA lists 5.36 m over a 40 km swath. SpaceX launched the first three Fireflies on Transporter-12 on 14 January 2025 and the next three on the NAOS mission on 26 August 2025, completing a six-satellite constellation. The Honeybee design extends coverage into the shortwave infrared with roughly 160 VNIR and 100 SWIR bands, and its first launch is planned for 2026.

Funding has come mostly from outside India. A seed round of $8 million closed in August 2020, a Series A followed in March 2022 — reported as $25 million by eoPortal and $27 million by Wikipedia — and Google led a $36 million Series B in June 2023. A $24 million extension from M&G Catalyst and Glade Brook Capital Partners closed in December 2024, taking the Series B to $60 million and total funding to $95 million at that point; by August 2026 Inc42 put the total at $96 million and headcount above 280. The same report gave FY25 revenue of ₹39.3 crore against ₹30.6 crore a year earlier, with net loss widening to ₹30.8 crore from ₹20.4 crore. NASA selected Pixxel in September 2024 among eight vendors on its Commercial SmallSat Data Acquisition On-Ramp1 award, worth up to $476 million across the group through 15 November 2028, and the company holds a five-year US National Reconnaissance Office contract for commercial hyperspectral capabilities.

In January 2026 a Pixxel-led consortium with Dhruva Space, PierSight and SatSure signed an agreement with IN-SPACe to design, build, own and operate India's first privately led national Earth-observation constellation: 12 satellites — five very-high-resolution optical, three multispectral, two hyperspectral and two X-band synthetic aperture radar — funded by more than ₹1,200 crore of consortium money over five years, held through a vehicle named Allied Orbits Private Limited and targeted to be operational by 2029. The selection was contested. Pixxel's group won by bidding Re 0, seeking no government funding, against ₹200 crore from an Astra Microwave Products consortium and ₹97 crore from GalaxEye Space with CoreEL Technologies, and IN-SPACe had offered repayable loans of up to ₹350 crore. Rival startups argued a zero-bid winner should not take support meant for underfunded companies, and ThePrint reported the consortium leader is roughly 80 percent foreign-backed; one scientist called the outcome "just a PR stunt", while IN-SPACe chairperson Pawan Goenka said the bid showed "private players have such confidence in opportunities". An earlier setback is on the record too: in February 2021 Pixxel pulled Anand off ISRO's PSLV-C51 rideshare five days before launch, saying software problems had surfaced in final testing.
